In order to prove one’s guilt or innocence in the court of law, evidence must be presented, and the facts of the case must be reviewed. A tremendous piece of the process of proving one’s guilt or innocence is the sworn testimony of a WITNESS. The word “witness” can be used as a noun or a verb and can be defined as “to see” an event that takes place or a person that “sees” an event take place (the dictionary). A witness is evidence or proof that something exists or happened.
Jesus says that he could not by his own words testify that he himself was the Messiah. Jesus had to have and must continue to have WITNESSES. In John 5:37 Jesus says,
“Also, the Father is my witness that he sent me, but wait you cant hear his voice because you don’t believe in me. You search the scriptures thinking that because they also prove or bear witness of who I am that the scriptures can give you eternal life. You read the scriptures and refuse to come to me to have life! Moses wrote about me and was a witness but you do not believe my words. Moses and his law will accuse you to the Father, but not me, I am here to save you.
When Jesus encounters the Samaritan woman at the well, he prophesied to her and told her that he was indeed the Messiah. The prophecy bore witness also that Jesus was the Christ. It was the Samaritan woman’s testimony that helped to lead her people to Jesus. Many Samaritans believed that Jesus was the Savior of the world once they invited Jesus in for themselves, and listened to his words. As it is written in John 4:39-42 and restated here:
“Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers.” They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”
After the encounter with the Samaritans, Jesus then traveled to Galilee to where he already had a ton of witnesses. The Galileans had already heard about him and seen his works and the Bible says they welcomed him. An official heard Jesus was in town and begged for Jesus to come with him to heal his son who was dying. Jesus says “oh you selfish generation unless you see signs and wonders you will never believe” (John 4:48). Jesus knows the human condition and knew what we as humans needed to increase our faith. He knew he was purposed to perform miracles and to prove he was the son of God and had the power and authority to give life and to save lives physically and spiritually. He healed the officials’ son as another sign that he is the Messiah. The official and his family were now witnesses because they experienced the healing power of God through Jesus for themselves. The official and the official’s son have a personal testimony.
I have witnessed the truth that Jesus saves in my my recovery from addictions and heartbreak and as a child of divorced parents. I can testify that Jesus interceded for me when my home was robbed at gun point and I was one minute from walking into the door before one of my friends appeared from nowhere and dragged me to the store with her after I profusely protested over and over again. I have witnessed my 5 year old son survive jumping out of a 2nd story window equating to a 14ft drop, having nothing but a tiny scratch because my Jesus carried him down to the ground or dispatched the angels to do it for Him.
Jesus interceded on my behalf as I hitched hiked through my senior year of high school with a good friend praying in the back seat of a stranger’s car. Jesus carried me through college working full-time and taking a full load of classes at night and on weekends. There is too many testimonies to list here, but it was many days and nights I have cried and it was Jesus that showed up as my friend proving that he sticks closer than a brother because I called on Him and believed that he sent Holy Spirit to comfort me.
My parents and grandparents introduced me to Christ early and I believed of Him watching their faith carry them through the trials and tribulations in life. But it was not until I came to Jesus myself, heard for myself and witnessed the work of the Father in my own life that I truly believed that he was sent by God to save me. Jesus knew I had to be shown just like the official. I had to be shown what faith in him could do.
I am an overcomer by the blood of the lamb and the WORD of my testimony (Rev.12:11) I am a living witness of what belief in JESUS, the Messiah, the son of the Living God, the Christ, the Good Shepard, the True Vine, the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God can do. Testifying of Jesus’ sacrifice, goodness, grace, and mercy brings more people to Christ and saves lives.
How about you? You have all the signs and wonders Jesus performed documented in the Word of God, you have the Samaritan woman’s testimony and also Moses’ and the officials’, the lame man, the 5000+, the prophets, Mary, Joseph, the Magi, the blind and deaf man, several demon-possessed men, John the Baptist, the disciples and Jesus’s testimony.
You have your parents testimony if you listen and your grandparents and pastors’ testimony and now you have mine. Don’t we all have Martin Luther King Jr’s testimony? He prophesied in his famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech and stated: ” Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!
What is your testimony? Was it a miracle that you were born? Was it a miracle that your own child was born? Was there a time when you got a job you weren’t qualified for, but you really needed it and prayed for it? What about a time that you didn’t study for the test, but you said a small prayer right before hoping you pass and you did, or better a MIRACLE occurred and the test was rescheduled?
Pay attention to the miracles performed in your own life and in this day, 2021, and beyond. “Oh you selfish generation unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe” says the Lord, but I know you and what it takes to grow you. What more do you need to come to me? Can you testify to my goodness, to my mercy, grace, and steadfast love? Are you ready to save lives with your testimony? Are you a witness?
Yes, Father, I’ll Be a Witness forever
